Confirmation at Good Shepherd is a three year experience (generally 6th, 7th, and 8th grades) with a four-part emphasis: worship, learning, service, and fellowship that happens between September and the beginning of Lent. It is a time in which parents and the whole community of faith continues the commitments made in baptism to “teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, and as they grow in years to place in their hands the Holy Scriptures and provide for their instruction in the Christian faith.”
Learning: Small group of five to six youth meet with their group guide for discussion following each of the 12 large group learning sessions, which are lead by the pastors.
Worship: The youth attend services as part of the congregation, and gain a fuller understanding of worship by completing and submitting sermon notes. On a rotating schedule, the small groups also participate as ushers and lectors at worship services.
Service: About once a month there is a small group servant event, which are most often held at one of three area nursing homes. Other servant events, such as the CROP Walk, require flexibility of days and times. During the year, the youth will participate in at least eight service hours.
Fellowship: Two or three times during the year, the small groups will have a fellowship event. These are generally held on Wednesday evenings at a mutually decided place for a mutually decided activity.
