For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God--not the result of works, so that no one may boast. ~Ephesians 2:8-9

About Good Shepherd

Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1955 as a mission congregation of English Lutheran Church, La Crosse, with 239 members led by Pastor J. L. Mattes.

Initially located in a small house chapel built for the congregation on South 27th Street, Good Shepherd moved to our current site on the corner of Birch Street and Mormon Coulee Road in 1961. The church building was expanded in 1982 to include the current sanctuary and additional office space, at which time the old sanctuary became the fellowship hall.

In 1995 the fellowship hall was renovated, expanded, and renamed the Mattes Center for Fellowship. In 2006 the parking lot across Birch Street was paved, the columbarium and Prayer Garden were dedicated, and the parsonage was converted into Good Shepherd Child Care, a Christian child care center.

Known locally as "the church with the children," Good Shepherd has been led since 1998 by Senior Pastor Roger Hjelle. New members are always welcome. Please come visit us and see if the welcoming atmosphere and sound of children in the halls is right for you.

This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. ~ Psalm 118:24
